Yacht varnish is somewhat inferior in its strength parquet, but it retains its elasticity after drying. Because of this, it can be applied to wooden (and not only) designs of the most complex forms, without fear that the hard layer will crack. This “behavior” of lacquer has one more plus - even with a point impact, which props wood, the surface film does not break and continues to perform its moisture-proof functions. So for decorative works, repairs in the house or refining garden furniture from an array of yacht varnish - a great option. It remains only to choose the right composition.

Yacht varnish which company to choose

Today, many manufacturers of coatings have expanded their range of varnishes high moisture resistance. And in order to make it clearer for buyers, what properties a new product has, they added a loud inscription “yacht varnish” to the names of goods.

There is no big deception here - the offered coatings really reliably protect wooden structures from water and sun. So if you do not plan to go to the sea on your summerhouse, it is possible to paint it with just such a varnish. Moreover, its cost will be relatively small.

Good coatings with waterproof function are offered by the company:

1. Poli-r

2. LLC "Taganrog paint factory" Rainbow "

3. Symphony

4. Polisan LLC (TM Maxima)

5. Private production enterprise "Enamel" (TM Rolax)

But if you need maximum water resistance or you are really looking for a varnish to protect watercraft, you will need real “naval” brands:

1. Caparol (TM Alpina)

2. Belinka

3. Yaroslavl colors

4. Johnstones

5. Eskaro

They will cost much more, but they will provide wood protection even from salty sea water.

Best alkyd yacht varnishes

It is the cheapest and most aggressive type of water-resistant paint and varnish, containing a large amount of toxins - organic solvents with a high yield of volatile substances. Because of this, alkyd varnishes are forbidden to use for interior work.

Even the use of PPE during the application and drying of the compound does not solve the problem - hazardous fumes containing xylene and toluene will continue to fill the rooms and when the coating has already cured. But the service life of such yacht varnishes will be at least 4-5 years.

Alpina yachtlack

Alpina Yachtlack.jpg1

The product of the Russian-German production is produced under the brand Caparol and in the full sense of the word is a yacht varnish. True, not purely alkyd, but with a reinforcing PU additive. It is used to protect the underwater and surface part of wooden vessels, which indicates an incredible resistance to atmospheric conditions and aggressive environments. However, due to the high toxicity of the composition in everyday life, it can only be used for outdoor use. The varnish is sold in 0.75 or 2.5 l cans, the consumption for single-layer application is from 80 to 90 ml / m2.

Pros:

  • Absolutely colorless coating - without yellowness;
  • Extremely durable - resistant to pitting and scratching;
  • Protects wood and metal from fresh / salt water;
  • Works great even in harsh weather conditions;
  • Gives a bright gloss on the surface.

Minuses:

  • Long dries (2-3 days), but it costs a stable formula;
  • After contact with skin, it dries it up to the appearance of cracks.

Belinka Yacht

Belinka Yacht

Another real varnish for yachts and boats is sold in three gloss versions: traditional gloss, matte and semi-gloss. But keep in mind: with a decrease in glossiness, the price per can increases. The manufacturer recommends applying the composition in 2-3 layers with a break of about a day - that is how much time it takes to solidify.And to get the smoothest glossy, a fourth pass may be required.

The varnish has excellent protective properties and is not even afraid of salt water, but its consumption is higher than in the case of similar compositions - 100-180 ml / m2, while you can only dilute it by 5%.

Pros:

  • Liquid consistency - it is convenient to apply a thin layer;
  • Well absorbed into the pores of wood;
  • Does not yellow and does not change the color of the base, although it seems dark;
  • Resistant to bumps and scratches;
  • Average price.

Minuses:

  • Uneconomical consumed;
  • Toxic, like all alkyd varnishes.

 Top Urethane Alkyd Yacht Varnishes

These compounds are more suitable for interior use due to the minimum content of toxic solvents. The use of urethane-alkyd varnish allows you to get on the wood surface an elastic film that does not crack even when heated, and also locks harmful organic fumes inside.

Premia

Premia

Varnish from the company "Yaroslavl paints" declared as quick-drying, and customer reviews fully confirm this. Premia contains UV filters that protect the wood from color change under the sun's rays, and also has resistance to salt water. And that justifies its name. But the most surprising thing is that the manufacturer is so sure of the strength of the layer that it recommends urethane-alkyd varnish even for flooring, which is not found in other brands.

Premia is sold in buckets of 0.9 and 2.7 liters, consumption is 75-100 ml / m2 for single-layer application. The final hardening of the varnish occurs after two days.

Pros:

  • It can be applied with any tool - with a brush, roller, sponge or spray gun;
  • Does not leave streaks and streaks;
  • Quickly set;
  • Creates a smooth water repellent film;
  • Easy to find on sale.

Minuses:

  • Not the cheapest, albeit domestic;
  • Unpleasant smell during work.

Eskaro Marine lakk 90

Eskaro Marine lakk 90

Estonian manufacturer Marine lakk is positioned as a means for exterior and interior work, which generally corresponds to the truth. After drying, the composition creates a glossy protective film on the wood surface with high resistance to cracking and abrasion (however, not enough so that it can be used for flooring).

As befits a real yacht varnish, Eskaro Marine is insensitive to salt water and tolerates washing even with the use of household chemicals. Sold in pails of 2.4 liters, flow rate of 100-125 ml / m2. Also on sale there is a similar composition "lakk 40" - with a semi-gloss effect.

Pros:

  • The gel-like consistency, which allows you to conveniently type a varnish with a brush;
  • When applied to vertical surfaces does not flow down;
  • Beautifully emphasizes the natural texture of wood;
  • The UV filter as a part of a varnish protects the massif from change of color under the sun;
  • Can be applied to old varnish coatings, not clearing them.

Minuses:

  • Dear;
  • Average coverage - you will need to apply at least 3 layers.

 The best alkyd urethane yacht varnishes

In fact, they do not differ from the previous type of varnish - a permutation of words means only a change in the percentage ratio of two bases: alkyd and urethane in favor of the first. Nevertheless, this allows you to get a yacht varnish with slightly different properties: quick-drying, but also more toxic.

Poli-r

Poli r

Waterproof varnish with UV filters can have two gloss effects: semi-matte and glossy. It not only protects the wood, but is also able to partially level the surface, which simplifies further care of it. The manufacturer promises a service life of decorative coating up to 9 years.

Poli-R is sold in banks of various sizes: from 0.75 to 15 liters. It has a high drying rate for tackiness (1 hour), and repeated application is possible already in 4-6 hours. The consumption of varnish is relatively small - from 70 to 90 ml / m2.

Pros:

  • Thick consistency, to save, you can dilute with white spirit;
  • Lays flat on a wooden base, spreads well on the surface;
  • Forms a smooth coating without brush marks;
  • No stickiness after drying;
  • Economical;
  • Inexpensive, easy to find on sale.

Minuses:

  • It has an unpleasant smell that does not erode immediately;
  • Maybe a little yellow.

Rainbow-Maler

Raduga Maler

This water-resistant varnish is distinguished by good absorbability when applied to wooden substrates, thanks to which the coating adheres securely to the surface and provides it with maximum protection from moisture. Not bad it keeps in the conditions of temperature difference, therefore during internal work it can be used even in the kitchen.

Buy Maler can be in banks of 0.9 or 2.7 liters. But here it is necessary to take into account that, due to its good absorbency, the consumption of the composition per square will increase to 110-130 ml. Drying time 4 hours.

Pros:

  • Dense, lies flat, leaving no strips from the instrument;
  • Does not drain off vertical surfaces;
  • Compared to other alkyds, it almost does not smell;
  • Beautifully emphasize the texture of natural wood;
  • Dries fast enough;
  • Over time, it does not tarnish or crack; it tolerates frost well or a rise in temperature;
  • Comfortable wide bank;
  • Affordable price.

Minuses:

  • It is uneconomical and requires application in 3-4 layers.

Maxima Yacht Varnish

Maxima Yacht Varnish.jpg1

“Land” yacht varnish from Polisan can be used to protect wooden structures in regions with hot, unstable or very humid climates. It is allowed to use it for painting ships, but only their surface part. In everyday life, Maxima is suitable for exterior and interior work.

The structure of a varnish includes the UF-filter protecting wood from color change under the influence of sunshine. You can apply Yacht Varnish with a brush or spray gun, having previously diluted it with white spirit. Consumption per layer is from 60 to 80 ml / m2, full solidification occurs in a day (at tack-off - 3 hours).

Pros:

  • It does not give any color, only shows the texture of the wood;
  • Good protection against moisture;
  • Resistant to abrasion, scratches, shocks;
  • Matte composition does not shine like the others;
  • The smell is surprisingly unsharp;
  • Over time, does not crack and peel off the surface;
  • Inexpensive.

Minuses:

  • The design of the cans for a different gloss effect is absolutely the same - it's easy to get confused.

The same manufacturer has a yacht varnish similar in characteristics, but already on a water-soluble polyurethane-acrylic base. And although it is less toxic, its protective properties are slightly worse.

 The best polyurethane yacht varnishes

Polyurethane resins are characterized by maximum strength and wear resistance, which allows the use of varnishes based on them to protect flooring. Another advantage of PU is high adhesion. Such a composition adheres well even to smooth metal surfaces, not to mention porous wood. Yacht paintwork materials possess similar properties, only the traditional water resistance is added to the excellent mechanical characteristics.

Johnstones Yacht Varnish

Johnstones Yacht Varnish

English weatherproof lacquer is designed for outdoor work and in all respects it corresponds to yachting. On the surface of prepared wood, it creates an elastic waterproof film, especially resistant to abrasion and shock loads. Sold in banks of 0.75, 2.5 and 5 liters, consumption - from 70 ml / m2.

Pros:

  • Does not crack on corners and edges of products;
  • Resistant to temperature effects and aggressive chemistry;
  • Contains UV filters;
  • Dries quickly - stickiness disappears in 2-4 hours;
  • Can be used to protect bricks, natural and artificial stone.

Minuses:

  • Dear;
  • Not everywhere is available for sale;
  • Contains a critical amount of volatile organics - up to 50%.

Rolax

Rolax

Ukrainian weather-resistant varnish is suitable not only for wood, but also for metal surfaces, creating a protective layer of increased hardness on them. In addition, it consists of UV filters, antiseptic and biocidal additives that destroy fungi and mold. So this varnish can be called truly universal.

The packaging of the manufacturer “Enamel” is somewhat nonstandard - 0.8 or 2.5 liters each, consumption of 80-120 ml / m2.

Pros:

  • Fits well even on smooth surfaces - without streaks;
  • Does not form streaks on the vertical and inclined bases;
  • Perfectly protects a tree from atmospheric factors and bioinfection;
  • Suspends the aging of wood;
  • Glossy composition gives a bright, almost mirror shine;
  • Available at a price.

Minuses:

  • Dries very long;
  • It has an unpleasant and persistent odor.

Symphony hardwood

Symphony hardwood

Moisture-resistant varnish with a UV filter comes in only two versions of gloss: glossy and with a silky-matte effect. Despite the fact that it has to wait for its hardening for a long time (a full set of strength occurs only after 2 weeks), the result is worth it. Hardwood coating is capable of protecting objects immersed in water for 7 days - such varnishes may not be suitable for real yachts, but this is a very good indicator for use in everyday life.

Symphony Hardwood is available in cans of 0.9, 2.7 and 9 liters, it differs by a small consumption in single-layer application - from 60 to 80 ml / m2.

Pros:

  • Can be applied to old coatings created by other types of varnish;
  • Initially colorless, but allows for tinting;
  • Provides excellent weather resistance to wooden structures;
  • Can be diluted with white spirit to 20%;
  • Relatively inexpensive.

Minuses:

  • It dries out not fast enough - up to 6-8 h for tackiness;
  • The smell does not erode for a long time.

 What yacht varnish to buy

1. Specifically, for boats, yachts and other structures that are in contact with aggressive media, you need a true naval varnish Eskaro Marine.

2. Approximately the same result, but a little faster can be obtained with the yacht varnish Premia. In addition, it is less toxic, which means that it can be used in internal works.

3. If you need to add the impact resistance of a decorative coating to all the protective properties, it is better to buy Alpina Yachtlack or polyurethane Johnstones Yacht Varnish.

4. Those for whom it is important to have the most colorless coating when applied to painted areas should use Belinka Yacht.

5. For unpainted surfaces, you can take the popular yacht varnish Poli-R. It gives a little yellowness, which looks very beautiful on fresh wood, but the service life of such a coating is one of the longest.

6. For interior work, as well as protection of surfaces in conditions of severe temperature extremes (kitchen tools, garden furniture), it is worth taking an inexpensive and quick-drying varnish Rainbow-Maler.

7. Porous and soft woods that are susceptible to mold fungi are best treated with durable Symphony Hardwood PU varnish with antiseptic additives.

8. Looking for a completely matte finish? You'll love Maxima Yacht Varnish.

9. For a mirror finish, choose Rolax yacht varnish. By the way, it is suitable even for finishing wooden floors and stairs.
